Before you confirm treatment
Ask who will perform the procedure, where it will take place, which professional registrations apply, what the proposed treatment includes, and how complications or changes to the plan will be handled.
- Share your complete medical history, allergies, current medicines and supplements directly with the clinical team.
- Request a written treatment plan that explains alternatives, material risks, expected recovery, follow-up arrangements and the total cost.
- Confirm who to contact during the day, outside normal hours and after you return home.
- Do not stop, start or change prescribed medicine unless the treating clinician instructs you to do so.
Your discharge and recovery plan
Before leaving the clinic or hospital, make sure you understand wound or oral-care instructions, medicine timing, activity restrictions, eating and drinking advice, follow-up dates, travel timing and who will review any test results.
Recovery varies by procedure and person. Pain, swelling and activity advice must be individualized by the treating team. For surgery, the NHS advises following the clinical team's guidance on movement, wound care and blood-clot prevention. Dental aftercare should likewise follow the oral surgeon's procedure-specific instructions.
When to seek urgent medical help
Contact the treating team promptly if symptoms are worsening or do not match the discharge instructions. Seek urgent local medical care for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden confusion, or signs that may indicate a blood clot such as new leg pain or swelling. Do not wait for a coordinator's reply in an emergency; call the emergency service in the country where you are located.
Travelling after treatment
Do not book a return journey based only on a marketing schedule. Ask the treating clinician when you are fit to fly or travel, whether you need assistance, and how mobility, hydration, compression garments or prescribed medication apply to your individual situation.
Keep your discharge summary, procedure details, medicine list, clinic contacts and travel-insurance information accessible throughout your journey.
